Chess, often called the “game of kings,” is a sport that sharpens the mind, teaches patience, and builds strategic thinking. Interestingly, chess traces its origins back to India, where it was known as Chaturanga in ancient times. Over centuries, it evolved into the global game we know today—one that continues to challenge minds and foster discipline across cultures.
In the spirit of this great legacy, the CISCE Zonal Chess Tournament was held on June 18th at Ramadevi Public School where a total of six schools participated in the tournament and there were 14 students representing our school. The event began in the Assembly Hall with a warm and motivating welcome speech by our respected Principal, Mrs. Qamar Sultana. Following her speech, the ceremonial lamp was lit by our principal Mrs. Qamar Sultana along with a few distinguished guests, marking the auspicious start of the event. The opening ceremony also featured a beautiful welcome song sung by the choir of the school setting a graceful tone for the day.
After the inauguration, participants were to register their names and simultaneously had been led to separate rooms with the help of the school volunteers—one for boys and one for girls—where they were given time to rest and practice before the matches began. This helped players settle in and mentally prepare for the competition ahead.
The tournament comprised four intense rounds, each filled with quiet focus, strategic brilliance, and sportsmanlike spirit. After each round there was a winner and an underdog, yet the peers didn’t give up and respected the opponent showcasing true SPORTSMANSHIP. The overall environment remained peaceful and disciplined, allowing players to stay concentrated throughout the event.
In terms of performance, Johnson Grammar School delivered a strong showing in both the Under-14 (U14) and Under-17 (U17) categories. Meanwhile, St. Joseph School took top honours in the Under-19 (U19) boys and girls categories, securing first place in both. Though we didn’t secure any medal, our warriors gave a tough competition to the opponents, learnt from the experience enabling us to perform better the next time!
The tournament concluded on a high note, receiving widespread appreciation from all the participating schools. Guests and participants alike praised the flawless organization and warm hospitality. Our school is looking forward to host more events and make them a successful experience.
